ジョン・ミルトン

ジョン・ミルトン（John Milton, 1608年 12月9日 - 1674年 11月8日から11月10日の間^[1]）は、イングランド（イギリス）の詩人。共和派の運動家であり、オリバー・クロムウェルを支持した。

代表作『失楽園』はダンテ『神曲』やアリオスト『狂えるオルランド』と並ぶルネサンス期の長編叙事詩の名作である。

生涯

作曲家のジョン・ミルトン（John Milton）と彼の妻のサラ・ジェフリーの息子として生まれた。1625年、ケンブリッジ大学クライストカレッジに入学。同年チャールズ1世が即位。学生仲間の間での評判はあまりよくなかった。1629年、学士号取得。1632年修士号取得。

1634年、戯曲『コマス』(Comus) が上演される。1637年、『コマス』が出版される。母親死亡。1638年-1639年イタリアを周遊。1642年結婚。清教徒革命時に教会改革論や言論の自由を論じた『言論・出版の自由アレオパジティカ』 (Areopagitica)を発表 (1644年)。政府のラテン語秘書として共和制を弁護。1649年チャールズ1世が(処刑)（英語版）される。1652年に過労で失明^[2]。王政復古後は詩作に没頭。

1658年、『失楽園』の制作に着手する。1674年没。
