アルジャーノン・ブラックウッド

アルジャーノン・ブラックウッド（Algernon Blackwood、1869年3月14日 - 1951年12月10日 ）は、イギリスのホラー小説作家、ファンタジー作家。アルジャナン、アルジャーナン、アルジャノンなどの表記もある。フルネームはアルジャーノン・ヘンリー・ブラックウッド（Algernon Henry Blackwood)。

モンタギュウ・ロウズ・ジェイムズ、アーサー・マッケンとともに近代イギリス怪奇小説の三巨匠と称される^[1]。

生涯

1869年、イングランド南東部のケント州クレイフォド生まれ。エディンバラ大学医学部中退。

20歳で単身カナダへ移住。牧場やホテルの経営を手がけるもそれぞれ半年で失敗。 以降、金の採掘、石鹸の製造、俳優（画家(ギブソン)の絵のモデルも務めたことがある）、富豪の秘書、ニューヨーク・タイムズの記者等、職業を転々とした後、30歳でイギリスに帰国する^[2]。

1906年、短編集『空家』（The Empty House）で小説家デビュー。

1948年、テレビジョン協会賞受賞。

1949年、文学上の功績によりC.B.E.（Commander of the British Empire）の叙勲を受ける。

1951年、82歳で死去。

魔術結社「黄金の夜明け団」に所属する魔術師でもあり、生涯独身であった。
