メリー・メル

メリー・メル（Melle Mel、本名: メルヴィン・グローヴァー、1961年5月15日 - ）は、グランドマスター・メリー・メル（Grandmaster Melle Mel）の名でも知られるアメリカ合衆国のラッパー。Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Fiveのリード・ラッパーで、ほとんどの(リリック)を書いている。

来歴

チェロキー族の母親から生まれた。自身を"MC"（マスター・オブ・セレモニー＝儀式の主人）と呼んだ最初の人物である。フューリアス・ファイブのもう一人のメンバーCowboy (キース・ウィギンス)は"hip-hop"という用語を生んだ。[2]

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Fiveは1979年にEnjoyレコードから"Superrappin'"を発表。

その後Sugarhillレコードに移り、チャートで"Freedom""The Birthday Party"などのパーティー・ソングがヒット。"Freedom"はゴールド（50万枚）となり、ツアーした。

ザ・メッセージ82

1982年、メリー・メルは社会問題に意識的になり、レーガノミクス・麻薬・麻薬が黒人コミュニティーに及ぼす影響などを扱った『ザ・メッセージ』を発表。

同曲はすぐにクラシックとなり、社会派ヒップホップの先駆けになった。同曲は(デューク・ブーティ)（英語版）のインストゥルメンタル曲"The Jungle"に歌詞を乗せたものである。同曲には以前の"Superrappin'"からの引用もあった。

『ザ・メッセージ』は1ヶ月以内にプラチナム（100万枚）となり、ヒップホップ初のグラミー賞入選となった。

他に、ニューヨーク生活の苦闘を"New York, New York"で、人生一般の戦いを"Survival (The Message 2)"でライムした。

『ザ・メッセージ』の印税をめぐってメリー・メルとSugarhillレコードのプロモーターSylvia Robinsonがもめるとグランドマスター・フラッシュはグループを脱退。

フラッシュはSugar Hillレコードを訴え、フューリアス・ファイブは分裂。

メルは「グランドマスター・メリー・メル」を名乗り、ザ・フューリアス・ファイヴのリーダーとなった。

1983年にグループは麻薬撲滅を題材とした楽曲"White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)" を発表。ポスト・パンクのバンドリキッド・リキッドの『cavern』のベースラインをサンプリングし、非公式ビデオは当時無名の映画学校生スパイク・リーが監督、当時新人の俳優ローレンス・フィッシュバーンが出演していた。

同曲は"Grandmaster + Melle Mel"として発表され、レーベルは、フラッシュが参加しているという錯覚を与えようとした。

メルは映画『ビート・ストリート』に出演、主題歌も歌いさらに成功した。

メインストリームでの成功

その後、1984年にチャカ・カーンの"I Feel for You"（プリンス作曲）でラップ参加する[3]。同楽曲にてメリー・メルはグラミー賞の「レコード・オブ・ザ・イヤー」賞を受賞した初のラッパーとなり、ラップをメインストリームに持ち込んだ。

Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Fiveとして"Step Off", "Pump Me Up", "King of the Streets", "Jesse", "Vice"などがヒットし、このうち"Vice"は人気ドラマの『マイアミ・ヴァイス』のサウンドトラックに収録された。また、"Jesse"は当時の黒人初の大統領候補ジェシー・ジャクソンへの投票を呼び掛ける内容である。

1988年にフラッシュと再合流しアルバム"On The Strength"を発表するが、(エリックB&ラキム)（英語版）、 , パブリック・エナミー, ブギ・ダウン・プロダクションズ, ビッグ・ダディ・ケインなどのニュー・スクールのミュージシャンのアルバムが多数チャートインしていたためヒットには至らなかった。

その後

その後(アパルトヘイトに反対するアーティストたち)（英語版）の一員としてアパルトヘイト撲滅歌『サン・シティ』の収録に参加した。

1980年代末にクインシー・ジョーンズの二作"Back On The Block" & "Q – The Autobiography of Quincy Jones"に参加した。

1996年にシェールのヒット"One By One"に参加。

1997年、Straight Gameレコードと契約、アルバムRight Nowを発表。元フューリアス・ファイブのScorpioも参加したが、売れなかった。

2001年、"On Lock"という曲をDie Hardという名前で映画Blazinのサントラで発表。Die Hardは2002年に7PRecordsでアルバム発表。

レディー・ガガとの共演

2006年,作家Cricket Caseyと絵本"The Portal In The Park"を発売。付録CDにはメルのラップ版ナレーションがついていた。ちなみに、同CDには当時無名のレディー・ガガの歌う二曲の歌も収録されていた。

2010年に絵本は再発。レディー・ガガは"World Family Tree""The Fountain of Truth"でメルと共演。

2006年、メルはプロレスの学校に入学。

2007年、allhiphop.comのインタビューで「WWEと契約してプロレス選手になり、自分の仕事をする」と宣言した。

2007年、初のソロ・アルバムMuscles（筋肉）発表。初のシングルは"M3 – The New Message"だった。

2007年、Melle Mel and The Furious Five (フラッシュを含む)はラップ・グループとして初めてロックンロールの殿堂入りした。受賞演説でメルはヒップホップを非暴力化すべきだと主張、「俺は撃たれたことがない。俺は逮捕されたことがない。人生ずっとヒップホップをやってきた。物事は俺一人では変えられない。みんなの助けが必要だ。さあいっしょにやろうぜ。まともにやるんだ」と発言した。

2008年ドラマ‘Bronx Flavor’に出演。

2011年、Urban Wrestling Federationに参加することを表明。

2012年のアイス-T の音楽ドキュメンタリー映画"Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap"に出演。
