トーマス・サージェント・ペリー

トーマス・サージェント・ペリー（Thomas Sergeant Perry、1845年 1月23日 - 1928年 5月7日）は、アメリカ合衆国の編集者、言語学者、英文学者、文芸評論家、翻訳者、文学史家である。作家ヘンリー・ジェイムズの生涯に渡る友人であり、ハーバード大学の教授だった。

若年期

ペリーは1845年 1月23日にロードアイランド州ニューポートで生まれた。父クリストファー・グラント・ペリー(Christopher Grant Perry)は、マシュー・ペリー代将の兄オリバー・ハザード・ペリー代将の息子である^[1]^[2]。母フランシス・サージェント(Frances Sergeant)は、ペンシルベニア州最高裁判所判事(トーマス・サージェント)（英語版）の娘である。母方の祖先にはベンジャミン・フランクリンがおり^[1]、ペリーはその玄孫に当たる^[2]。

ヘンリー・ジェイムズとは幼い頃からの友人である。南北戦争前には^[3]、ニューポートの教会学校に一緒に通っていた^[4]。ジェイムズを通じて画家・日本研究者のジョン・ラファージと知り合い、後にペリーの姉のマーガレットはラファージの妻となった^[2]。

ハーバード大学で1866年に学士号、1869年に修士号を取得した。1866年から1868年まで、パリとベルリンに留学した^[1]。

キャリア

ハーバード大学で、1868年から1872年までドイツ語のチューターを、1877年から1881年まで英語の専任講師(instructor)を、1881年から1882年まで英文学の講師(lecturer)を務めた。慶應義塾大学の福沢諭吉がハーバード大学に対して英文学の専門家の派遣を要請し、それに応じてペリーが派遣されることになった^[5]。ペリーは一家で来日し、1898年から1901年までの3年間、慶應義塾大学の英文学の教授を務めた^[1]^[6]。

エッセイストとしても活動し、様々な作家についてのエッセイが『(ノース・アメリカン・レビュー)（英語版）』や『(センチュリー・マガジン)（英語版）』などの文学雑誌に掲載された^[7]。

詩人(エドウィン・アーリントン・ロビンソン)（英語版）は、詩集"The Three Taverns"（三軒宿）をペリーとその妻リラに捧げた^[8]。

私生活

1874年4月9日、ペリーはリラ・キャボット(Lilla Cabot)と結婚した。リラは画家であり、アメリカの印象派における重要人物である^[9]^[10]。2人の間には以下の3人の娘がいた^[9]^[11]。
