オリン・キープニュース

オリン・キープニュース（Orrin Keepnews 1923年3月2日 - 2015年3月1日 ）はブロンクス[1]出身の作家・音楽プロデューサー。リバーサイド・レコード（1953～1964）などでの作品で知られる。

生涯

プロデューサー業

1943年コロンビア大学卒業、英文学学位取得し、[2] その後第二次世界大戦末期の東京大空襲に参加した。

1946年コロンビア大学院に入学したのち、サイモン・シャスター出版社で編集者を務め、コロンビアの同級生Bill Grauerが1948年にオーナーになった雑誌「The Record Changer」でも活躍した。

1952年、GrauerとともにRCAヴィクターのXレーベルの再発シリーズを担当し、翌年ふたりはリバーサイド・レコードを設立した。当初このレーベルはスイング・ジャズの再発盤ばかり出していたが、ピアノのランディー・ウェストンと契約し、ようやく同時代のシーンに興味を抱いた。

1955年、プレスティッジ・レコードとの契約が切れたセロニアス・モンクを獲得したのを皮切りに、ビル・エヴァンス, キャノンボール・アダレイとナット・アダレイ, ウェス・モンゴメリー, ジョニー・グリフィン、ジミー・ヒースなどと契約し、プレスティッジやブルーノートの対抗馬となる。1961年にはビル・エヴァンス・トリオの『Sunday At The Village Vanguard』『Waltz for Debby』をライブ録音した。

この時期Grauerはビジネスに専念したが、1963年末に心臓発作で急死。リバーサイドも1964年夏に倒産した。

リバーサイド倒産後

キープニュースはピアニスト(ディック・カッツ)とともにマイルストーン・レコードを1966年に発足し、マッコイ・タイナー, ジョー・ヘンダーソン, (リー・コニッツ),ゲイリー・バーツと契約した。 1972年サンフランシスコに引っ越し、リバーサイドの権利を買ったファンタジー・レコードでジャズのを担当した。マイルストーンもファンタジーが買収し、リバーサイドで一緒だったソニー・ロリンズと契約し、リバーサイドの再発盤を連発した。ビル・エヴァンスがファンタジーに参加したのはこのころである。 1980年にキープニュースは「どんな最高の条件であれ、もう誰かのために働くのは嫌だ」と話し、フリーランスに戻った。

1985年(Landmark Records)を設立し、[3][4] クロノス・カルテットがビル・エヴァンスやモンクの曲を録音し、(ボッビー・ハッチャーソン)は後期の傑作アルバム群を録音し、1993年Landmarkは(ミューズ・レコード)（英語版）となる。

CD時代にも再発盤を担当。デューク・エリントンの24枚組CDボックス『RCA Centennial set』を1999年に制作。リバーサイドの『Keepnews Editions series』も担当。

私生活

Lucile Kaufmanと1948年に結婚、1989年に妻が亡くなり、衣装デザインのMartha Eganと再婚。

息子ピーター・キープニュースはThe New York Timesの編集者で、ジャズなどについての本をいくつか出している[5]。

もう一人の息子デビッド・キープニュースはニューヨークニューヨーク市立大学ハンター校で看護学を教えている。

2015年3月1日に91歳で死去[2]。

『The "Interplay" Sessions』（ビル・エヴァンス1984）と『Thelonious Monk: The Complete Riverside Recordings』（1988）でグラミー受賞。

2004年Trustees Award受賞。
